Pathology Centre of Excellence 

Client: Gateshead Health NHS Trust

The centre amalgamates specialist pathology services from City Hospitals, Sunderland Foundation Trust, South Tyneside Foundation Trust and Gateshead Health NHS Trust. 

The project involved transforming a disused existing 1970s laundry building and providing an additional two storey extension. 

The central pathology facility comprises a series of laboratories accommodating specialist staff and the equipment needed to undertake clinical diagnostic tests of human tissue samples delivered from the South of Tyne acute hospitals and GP surgeries. 

The laboratories are supported by a sample reception, specialist clean room laboratories, reporting and write up areas, staff entrance, staff changing, central stores and ancillary support accommodation.
