Client: University Hospital of North Staffordshire (NHS) Trust

The brief was to rationalise the existing estate onto a single site to enable twenty first century acute healthcare services to be provided on the City General Campus, the largest of three existing sites. 

The masterplan provides a rationalised, coherent site development strategy that not only serves the immediate service delivery needs but provides a robust framework for the future development of the campus with flexibility to respond to evolving clinical strategies. 

The project involved the phased development of a wide range of specialist facilities to rationalise and streamline future acute care delivery. Initial development phases included the maternity hospital, oncology centre, catering facility, CSSD, and decked car parking to release the development site for subsequent construction of the diagnostic hub, trauma centre and inpatient accommodation. 

While the scale of the development is substantial and the site complex, the design sets out to deliver a positive and humane environment with a real sense of identity and place. Through careful use of site context and thoughtful massing of the building elements it was possible to create positive and usable public space.
